Clear Creek Distillery
Steve McCarthy practically invented craft distilling in the United States. Starting decades before the trend, Steve distilled the worlds best pear eau de vie from his family’s pear orchard’s in the Hood River Valley. He also developed one of the country’s best small batch whiskeys, and dozens of other craft spirits.
When it came time to retire, Steve wanted to make sure his company ended up in the right hands. When your industry is suddenly sexy, it can be tempting to sell to the highest bidder. But sometimes it’s about more than just the money. It’s about being true to your values and your heritage.
Pragma helped Steve find the right buyers for his company: people who understood and appreciated the values of the company. Hood River Distillers was the first distillery in Oregon to open after prohibition. Their first products also came from the fruit of the Hood River Valley. HRD wanted to return to its roots – perfect fit.
The transition to new owners strengthened the culture of the company, improved relationships with its major supplier, provided financing for growth, and allowed a successful businessman to retire knowing his family’s legacy was safe in new hands.

Pragma Group developed multiple growth strategies, and tested each of them against the cultural and financial requirements of the business. Looking at every growth strategy known to restaurants, ultimately it was decided to split the company in two.
Pragma Group helped build a world-class marketing team, and spearheaded an effort to tell the brand story in a new way. We launched a campaign in Texas, where people are serious about their smoked meats.
